Part of the reason why William joining the Middletons for New Years Day was so important, was because the couple never had a chance to celebrate the holidays together. Despite being in a serious relationship for four years, Kate was not allowed to spend Christmas with her boyfriend since – at the time – it was not permitted for non-Royals to celebrate the holiday with the Royal Family. Could this have struck a nerve on Kate?
Of course, most couples in a serious relationship like to spend the holidays together, not being able to because of a “commoner” status would likely make anyone at least a little bit hurt. Perhaps spending each holiday season apart was partly to blame for their split?
