Bobby Brown’s success inspired New Edition members to pursue their own solo music careers. Bobby’s album called Don’t Be Cruel went multi-platinum in 1988 pushing the New Edition members to say to themselves – if he can do it, why can’t I? Thus began the first hiatus of the group. Bell Biv DeVoe was born soon after featuring the trio from New Edition Michael Bivins, Ricky Bell, and Ronnie DeVoe. By 1990 Bell Biv DeVoe released their first album called Poison, which went quadruple platinum.
