Following her second album, Underwood established her first philanthropic foundation Checotah Animal, Town, and School Foundation. The organization works to improve the quality of life for Checotah, Oklahoma residents. Nearly a quarter of its residents live in poverty in the small town. Underwood sang a song about her upbringing on her debut album called I Ain’t in Checotah Anymore. The town thanked the singer by erecting a welcome sign dedicated to her. Underwood makes an effort to perform in her hometown whenever she returns.
