Only about 5% of the movie was actually filmed on location in Egypt and the Sinai Desert. The rest was all filmed in Hollywood on constructed stages.

While many of the scenes depict slaves working tirelessly in the hot sun, in reality the studio they were filming in was kept at very cold temperatures to keep the “mud” from drying out. Because the studio was so cold the scantily clad actors were frequently covered in oil in order to simulate the look of sweating in the heat.
