Before John Travolta portrayed the lovable, yet over protective, mother, Edna, in Hairspray, he had not starred in a musical for over decade. Movie critics were extremely excited when they found out that the legendary singer and dancer would be finally be doing it again in a hit motion picture.
One critic even praised John for his ability to both play a woman, as well as making this woman both adorable and sweet. Although it was something quite different than his bad-boy roles, John was happy to return to musicals.
