John Gotti was the quintessential Italian-American gangster who dominated the underground scene of New York City. He grew up very poor, and so the riches of the gangsters he saw were quite attractive to him. Gotti was quite a complex character, which is arguably why it took John Travolta so long to prepare for his role.
While the critics noticed that John (Travolta) had put a lot of work into refining his portrayal of John (Grotti), they were still severely underwhelmed with the rest of the move. Needless to say, the film did not enter John’s repertoire of his greatest movies.
