By the 70s, Montgomery was already an established actress, but she shot to stardom during her time on the ABC comedy, Bewitched from 1964 to 1972. At the time, it was ABC’s highest-rated series ever, which correlated with Montgomery’s fame and success.
The show would have been extended for a ninth season; however, Montgomery split from her husband, William Asher, who was coincidentally the show’s director. The conflict between the two pretty much ended the show.

Montgomery battled colon cancer for many years. She had gone into remission, but in 1995, she was told it had returned.
She was filming ‘Deadline for Murder: From the Files of Edna Buchanan’ when she noticed her symptoms, but she chose to ignore them, to prioritize her career. Due to this, the cancer had spread to her liver, and she was no longer treatable. She passed away eight weeks later in her Beverly Hills home, not wanting to stay in the hospital until the end of her days.
