By the 1970s, Springfield was a common household name thanks to plenty of hit singles in the decades before. There was barely a person who didn’t know the award-winning singer, but her sales started decreasing.
Her 1978 album, It Begins Again, made it to the UK top 50, but not one of Dusty Springfield’s songs charted in the UK Top 40 or Billboard Hot 100 from 1971 to 1986. She finally released a single in 1989 which reached the UK Top 20 and briefly revived her music career.

In 1994, Dusty Springfield was releasing an album named A Very Fine Love, which was to be her penultimate album. However, during the production of this album, Springfield fell ill. She announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Following this, she underwent months of radiation treatment and chemotherapy. In 1995, after having been in remission for little under a year, the cancer returned, and Springfield sadly passed away in March 1999 after vigorous treatment had failed to cure her of the illness.
