After several successful songs, in 1967, Aretha Franklin earned her first top-10 single for I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You).
The album by the same name eventually went gold. Franklin’s version of Otis Redding’s Respect reached number one on the R&B charts, as well as the pop charts. It later became known as her signature song, and arguably her most famous. It was also dubbed a civil rights and feminist anthem. Aretha Franklin was one of the best loved musicians of the ’70s, for sure.

Franklin’s album, A Rose Is Still a Rose, sold over 500,000 copies and went gold. Franklin carried on being a worldwide icon well into the 2000s.
In 2014, Franklin performed a compilation of Rolling in the Deep and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough on the Late Show with David Letterman, which earned her a standing ovation, and reminded the world that she still had it! However, in August 2018, Franklin sadly passed away. She will always remain an icon, though, no doubt about it!
