Bardot debuted in Le Trou Normand in 1952 and frequently appeared in movies after that. However, after starring in multiple films which did not perform well at the box office, and were poorly received by critics, Bardot decided to “get out elegantly” by retiring from acting.
She released her last film in 1973, The Edifying and Joyous Story of Colinot. While many fans were heartbroken by her decision, she believed it was for the best, seeing as her movies were no longer gaining as much popularity as she had hoped.

Since her retirement from acting, Bardot has used her fame for the greater good. She became a huge animal rights activist, earning thousands to put towards charities and protection programs.
She has written compelling letters to many organizations and people criticizing traditions and the inhumane treatment of animals. Many of her pieces have been the center of controversy, and have landed her with many fines in court, however.
