It’s not entirely unheard of for women of a certain age in Hollywood to be cast in more mature, or maternal roles, compared to their male counterparts. In The Ten Commandments actress Martha Scott, who played Moses’ mother Yochabel, was only ten years older than Charlton Heston, who played Moses.
Nina Foch, who played his adoptive mother Bithiah, was actually younger than Heston by a year. As the movie went on makeup helped these women age, but it’s easy to forget how young they actually were!
