The NBC family-drama This Is Us has quickly become one of the most watched television series in the country. The tear-jerker tells the heartbreaking story of the Pearson family which includes a set of triplets (Chrissy Metz, Justin Hartley, and Sterling K. Brown) as well as the devoted parents who raised them (Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia). Over the past two years since the series premiered, This Is Us has received heaps of positive attention including numerous awards and nominations.
If you have been keeping up with the series, which just had its season two finale, chances are you are familiar with what makes it stand out among the rest. The award-winning show has it all from incredibly detailed writing to an insanely talented cast. Dan Fogelman, the series’ creator, has been keeping us on our feet with his unique writing style which slowly reveals devastating secrets by bringing us back and forth in time. Of course, we are always left with more questions.
Up until recently, one of the show’s biggest mysteries was how the beloved Pearson patriarch Jack Pearson died. Near the end of season two, viewers were finally revealed the heartbreaking truth, that Jack passed away by cardiac arrest caused by inhaling too much smoke while rescuing his family, and the family’s dog, from a tragic house fire.
Although we now can finally say we know the truth about how Jack died (whether we were ready for it or not) there are still so many questions from the series that have yet to be answered. Some questions we have had since season one, and others just appeared more recently.
In the season two finale The Wedding, we finally got to see Kate and Toby get hitched. Despite a few bumps here and there, including Randall and Kevin losing the bride for a bit, the wedding and ceremony went smoothly, with the whole Pearson gang happy and celebrating. We even got to see an aged Jack attend the wedding, via Kate’s dream that is.
Of course, This Is Us wouldn’t be This Is Us if it had a season finale end on such a happy note. Just when we thought all was well, the writers had to throw even more shocking twists our way. At the end of the episode, we were left with quite a few cliffhangers which left us a bit confused and worried to say the least. As if we didn’t have enough lingering unanswered questions already…

We typically see Toby as the cheery, funny, guy who is always there to lift up Kate when she needs it. However, in the season two finale, Toby’s parents remind him of his dark past and the depression he once fell into. Although he seems over the moon with joy at his and Kate’s wedding, in a flash-forward scene we suddenly see Toby in his bed looking miserable. Kate tells him that the doctor needs to talk to him about adjusting his medicine. Is Toby sick? Did he slip into depression?
