Matt was raised in Newton, Massachusetts by an office manager mother and a mechanic father. He attended Newton North High School and was part of the 1985 graduating class, alongside the future star comedian Louis C.K. After he graduated from high school, he moved to Florida where he pursued a career in modeling. Shortly after, he moved to New York and took some drama courses which eventually led to him landing some small TV roles, such as Vinnie, and eventually landing the role of a lifetime on Friends when he was 27 years old.
