We know that Dick York was originally cast to play Darrin Stephens, and that Dick Sargent eventually replaced him when York was too injured to continue working. However, both of these Richards were not the Bewitched showrunner’s first pick!
Instead, they considered another Richard before them both: Richard Crenna. Crenna would go on to have notable roles in Rambo and Hot Shots, but at the time of Bewitched, he was too busy with a different role. Even though the producers wanted him, he couldn’t break his contract, so they had to keep looking.
