After five seasons, Elizabeth Montgomery felt that she had done all that she possibly could with her character Samantha. She was tired of the same old thing, and wanted new roles that could challenge and excite her.
Then, after much discussion and negotiation with the producers, Montgomery agreed to come back to film more seasons with a hefty raise and partial ownership. Unfortunately, many viewers noted that the spark had gone from the show, and that Montgomery seemed to only be going through the motions.
