Once arriving in L.A., Melissa was quick to land a job with famous comedy improv group The Groundlings. However, she soon realized the reality of being an aspiring actress in Hollywood: although she was able to land a few roles, including a guest appearance in her cousin Jenny McCarthy’s show, she was finding it hard to land a steady job. However, in 2000, she finally received the role she was waiting for, as the lovable, kooky chef and BFF of Lorelai, Sookie St. James, in the hit comedy-drama Gilmore Girls.
