When Damaris Phillips won the ninth season of Food Network Star, foodies nationwide began salivating. A Kentucky girl through and through, Phillips brought a breath of fresh air to the Southern cuisine we know (and won’t admit to our doctor we love). However, the star of Southern & Hungry wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, even when her career was just beginning. Speaking in 2013, she stated wanting to make food “people can eat every single day.” Then, without mentioning Paula Deen by name, she said “Southern cuisine has been misinterpreted,” as it’s not all fried meat and gravy.
