While Henson was planning on selling the rights to the muppets to Disney studios all the way back in 1990, he died a few days before the deal could go through. Ten years later in 2000 the Jim Henson Company sold off the rights for the muppets for more than half a billion dollars to German company EM.TV. However, that company went bankrupt, and the Jim Henson Company bought the rights back for $78 million dollars, before turning around and reselling the rights to Disney later that year.
