When Jim Henson was starting University of Maryland’s theatrics program, he decided go to work at the DC NBC affiliate on his show Sam and Friends – the same show where many of the original muppets made their debut. Kermit was made when Henson saw his mom about to throw out an old coat. He took the old coat from the rummage pile, and repurposed it into Kermit! Also, Henson loved the plastic balls used to make Kermit’s eyes so much, that when the company that made them folded, Henson bought the entire rest of their stock.
