[post_page_title]Disney bought the rights to the Muppets in 2004[/post_page_title]
Disney was set to acquire the rights to the muppets in 1990, but the weekend before the deal to sell the rights for $120 million ($219,230,000 in 2017 dollars) was to be signed, Jim Henson died. It wasn’t until 2004 that Disney was able to finally purchase the rights to the muppets from the Jim Henson Company. When they finally did, they were able to only get the rights to the original muppets, with the Sesame Street muppets remaining the property of the Sesame Workshop.
