We really have not heard much about the Italian military ever since they lost in World War II while fighting on the side of the Axis powers. This is because after that war, the Italians decided to downsize drastically, thereby putting much of their defense in the hands of NATO.
However, they have joined in on numerous wars over the past several years, going into Iraq and Afghanistan after the fighting was over. The military now is primarily used in UN peacekeeping missions.
