Japan has a very unique type of military, having been forced to be a pacifist nation after losing to the United States back in World War II. However, the United States did allow Japan to set up a Self-Defense Force.
This enables the Japanese government to have defensive capabilities in case of an attack, but does not let them have any offensive capabilities. They had that in the 1930s, and then half of southeast Asia was taken over.
