The Turkish Military has been a large part of Turkish society ever since Kemal Ataturk founded the modern Turkish nation back in 1920. Since then, Turkey has had coup after coup, ensuring that no one group in the country is able to take over too much power.
Today the Turkish military is heavily involved with the Syrian Civil War, even going in and occupying parts of the country. The Turks also have been dealing with a long running Kurdish insurrection.
