If you had a crazed dictator armed with nuclear weapons who wanted to destroy your country sitting on your border, you too would invest heavily in you military like South Korea has done.
The east Asian country has mandatory conscription, enabling them to have well over a half a million active duty soldiers and an astonishing three million reserve personnel. But every single soldier is needed in case North Korea decides to nuke and or shell the capital Seoul.
