It turns out that the Kingdom of Norway may not have lost its Viking zeal after all. There is a mandatory draft into the Norwegian military for both men and women, something which is key to this northern country’s defense.
Norway does not seem to want nor need to get into military engagements to flex its muscle, primarily using oil money instead. However, Norway did send personnel to attack Libya in 2011, as well as send troops to Afghanistan during the NATO invasion there.

The current iteration of the South African military was created following the toppling of apartheid in 1994. Now, in an effort to ensure equality, there are racial quotas which guarantee that every race has an equal chance at getting into the military.
Today the military is not focused as much as fighting communist rebels (like in the 1970s and 1980s), but is heavily involved in peacekeeping operations all over Africa, including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic.
