Paula was born and raised in Albany, Georgia by a deeply religious Baptist family. Paula was a straight-A student at Albany High School, where she was also a member of the cheerleading team.
At 18, right after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, and first husband, Jimmy Deen. She started to suffer from panic attacks during her 20s, which is when she started to focus on cooking meals for her family as a way to relax. Her grandmother handed her down some authentic Southern recipes, which she still uses today.
