Padma Lakshmi was born in what is now Chennai, India. However, Lakshmi’s mother divorced her father when she was only a few years old, and her mother had to flee to the United States to escape the shame put upon her by her culture.
Padma therefore spent the majority of her childhood shuttling between India and the United States, living with one parent or the other. Lakshmi ended up attending school at the William Workman High School in Los Angeles, then went to Clark University in Massachusetts.
