Not so much a straight-laced biographical drama, Rocketman is as fantastical as the person at its center – Elton John. We think Taron Egerton, who plays the singer, nailed an incredibly difficult role, and we’re not the only ones. When the film premiered at Cannes, it got a four-minute standing ovation – and made Elton himself, who was in the audience, cry. The film covers 35 years of John’s professional and personal life and never shies away from showing John’s battles with his personal demons. It’s a riveting performance, made that much better by Egerton doing all of John’s songs himself.
