According to Matt Smith, the actor who played him in The Crown, the real star of the royal household is Prince Philip. Much the same is true of the show itself, where Smith turns in a strong performance as a proud man trapped in forever playing second fiddle to his wife. That paradox – a giant of a man having to literally bow to his wife – is what drew Smith to the role, as did the fact that Philip is someone who has always done whatever he wanted. “I just found a lot to celebrate in Philip,” he said – and we did the same in his portrayal.
