When Oscar-winner Emma Stone was preparing to play tennis great Billie Jean King in “Battle of the Sexes,” the secret to unlocking her character ended up being a tan. The movie, about the ridiculous 1973 inter-gender match between King and fellow player Bobby Riggs, is pretty good, but Stone’s performance makes it even better. Of course, looking the part was a must, but it wasn’t easy for a woman as low-key as King. Luckily, there were a lot of reference materials, so Stone was able to embody King through dyeing her hair, wearing a wig and glasses – and a spray-on tan.
