When production on Selena, the biopic about the life of Mexican-American singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez, was about to get underway, casting the title role became a problem. More than 21,000 people auditioned, still the second-largest casting call in Hollywood history, after the search for Gone With the Wind’s Scarlett O’Hara. Eventually, actress and dancer Jennifer Lopez chosen for her first starring role – and Selena’s fans were outraged, because Lopez was not of Mexican descent. Their fears were put to rest when she knocked the performance out of the park, both looking and sounding the part.
