Elisabeth would eventually return to starring roles in films, but became annoyed by typecasting. Due to her roles as love interests in romantic comedies, Shue found herself consistently being cast as a good-as-gold girl-next-door, and she wanted some different roles to broaden her horizons.
Her chance to do so came with the 1995 film ‘Leaving Las Vegas’, a dark and personal film about dependence and emotional survival. ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ was a huge success, and Shue won acclaim for her performance, even being nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars.
