It seems as though everyone wanted to try their hand at securing a place on the Friends cast (and rightly so)! Janeane Garofalo was a comedy actress, known for her roles in The Larry Sanders Show and Saturday Night Live, and the producers had her in their minds when writing the script.
The role of Monica was originally going to be edgier, which is what made them consider Garofalo, but in the end they decided to change direction, and Courteney Cox was given the part instead.
