After her initial success on The X-Files, Gillian Anderson auditioned to play the role of Lady Cora Crawley for the period drama, Downton Abbey. The actress nearly landed the character, but the show decided to go with Elizabeth McGovern instead.
Now, it’s hard to imagine the show without Elizabeth as one of the leading ladies. Elizabeth has had a successful acting career in her time after appearing in Ordinary People, Once Upon a Time, and Ragtime, with her next appearance due to be in the film The Chaperone.
